With it being Opening Day, I can’t help but wish I were back
home in Cincinnati cheering on the Reds and celebrating.
While the Cincinnati Reds were pretty awful last year and made some
questionable trades, Opening Day is one of the best celebrations in
Cincinnati. Downtown is hyped, people are decked out in Reds gear, and people
couldn’t be more excited.
The Reds have been featured throughout social media today.
There have been posts created by their own Cincinnati Reds accounts, attendees of the
event, and sport accounts such as MLB. Having been to the Opening Day ceremony
before, it is quite a party. With the parade, crazy outfits, and all the Skyline
Chili you can eat (best thing ever…), parents take off work and kids skip
school to attend.
Opening Day is being featured all over social media sites
including Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. It is a huge hashtag
trend and all of the baseball teams are posting pictures and statuses about the
day. Over the past week, Facebook users were able to change their profile
picture to support their favorite MLB teams in preparation for Opening Day. On
Snapchat, there are geotags for MLB teams, as well as a new geolenses that
allow users who follow MLB baseball to show their team spirit.
The MLB has made a lot of new changes to its social media
policy. For the first time ever, players are allowed to use smartphones in
dugouts and bullpens during live games to interact with their fans and use the
“Snapbat” selfie stick. MLB has been using Snapchat since this year’s first
“Snapchat Day” where the players showed their fans what Spring Training is like
for the players. Snapchat is now also allowed to cover MLB games and events, giving
them access to official MLB logos, marks, and exclusive behind-the-scenes
content.
It’s crazy to think that the baseball season has officially
begun. Seeing all the posts about Opening Day definitely makes me wish I were there. And while I’m bummed I can’t catch the game on TV here in
Athens, I can’t wait to attend my first game of the season and cheer on my
favorite players.
